ABOUT THE COURSE
The five day Introductory Safety and Health Representatives Course: has been developed to meet the requirements of the Western Australian Occupational Health and Safety Legislation. This course is accredited by the Commission for Occupational Safety and Health of Western Australia. Applicants are entitled to attend the introductory Safety & Health Representatives course as prescribed in Part IV of the Occupational Safety & Health Act 1984 and Part 5 of the Mines Safety and Inspections Act 1994.

COURSE AIMS
Using recognised practices and principles, linked with current safety and health legislation clients will gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to become an effective workplace safety and health representative.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
If you have been elected as a workplace safety and health representative in Western Australia, this introductory course will provide you with essential information for carrying out your role under the ACT.

COURSE OVERVIEW
The course is conducted over five consecutive days and includes:

  • Occupational Safety and Health legislation
  • Inspections and Investigations
  • Hazard identification and risk management
  • Communication and representation
  • Conflict resolution and provisional improvement notices (PIN)

LENGTH
The course is one week full-time as specified under the W.A. Occupational Safety & Health legislation.
The course runs each month, (see Safety Reps page) for exact dates.

VENUE
The monthly courses are run at the Carlisle campus of Swan TAFE. (The maximum number of participants per course is 20)
Industry specific courses are run at an agreed location.

COST (Western Australia Only)

2010 cost = $750.00 ($68.18 GST included) per person to secure a position.

National Qualifications
Worksafe WA has formally aligned the 5 day Introductory Safety & Health Representatives Course with the first six units in the National Certificate III of Occupational Health and Safety.

The Australian Centre for Work Safety (ACWS) is therefore able to offer all active safety representatives who have completed the introductory Safety and Health Representatives Course the opportunity to attain these first six units by completing one workplace assessment activity from each unit’s corresponding Learner Guide. ACWS will provide further resources to assist participants meet the assessment requirements of the remaining six units. In order to attain the completed National Certificate III in Occupational Health & Safety a workbook and an assignment will be the standard assessments for the remaining six units.
